Fall 2011 Application for BSA Program Now Available

Applications for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Program are submitted by students during the semester that they take ACCT 351. The Fall 2011 application is now available in the BSA section of this site.

ACCT 351 Students: Applications for BSA Program Due Friday, Nov 4

Greetings ACCT 351 students,

I hope you are all having a good semester! Now that you have all successfully completed ACCT 350 and are all working hard in ACCT 351/COM it is time for you to submit your application to have your major changed from Pre-Accountancy to Accountancy. Here is the process:

1) Fill out the attached Accountancy Application

2) Turn in the application along with a current copy of your DPR to the Department office (JH 3123) by 4:45 pm on Friday, November 4, 2011

3) We will process your applications and you will either receive a letter from the department that (a) states you will be admitted to the Accountancy major after signing the enclosed 'Statement of Understanding' or (b) states that you are on hold because of some academic issue (low grades in upper division classes or GPA below 3.0).

4) After you submit the Statement of Understanding we will process the change of major form for you.

If you are trying to apply for graduation you will need to wait until we process your 'change of major' before you may apply.

MSA: July 31 Application Deadline Rapidly Approaching

Chances are you’ve heard by now that students admitted to the Fall 2011 MSA Cohort have already begun registering for classes. If you were hoping to be part of this select group, it’s not too late. But you will have to act fast. The deadline to apply for admission to the first cohort of the CSUN MS in Accountancy is July, 31^st.

Fortunately, the application process is pretty easy.

HOW TO APPLY

For CSUN alumni who graduated with a B.S. in Accountancy, all you have to do is complete three simple steps:

1. CSU Graduate Application. Complete the online CSU system-wide application for admission as a graduate student. The web address is: http://www.csumentor.edu/

Under Major/Program objective, select Business Administration - Accountancy - MS from the drop down menu. Be sure to include the $55 application fee.

2. Transcripts. Have official transcripts from all institutions attended (except CSUN) mailed to the CSUN Office of Admission and Records:

3. MSA Application. Complete the online supplemental application for the COBAE Office of Graduate Programs. The web address is:

But what if you haven’t graduated yet because you have six units or less to finish this fall? Can you still apply? The short answer is yes. You can be admitted under the BSA to MSA Pathway. Complete details can be found in the BSA-to-MSA attachment.

For applicants who didn’t graduate with a B.S. in Accountancy from CSUN, one additional step is required:

4. Submit official copies of your Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores to the COBAE Office of Graduate Programs using CSUN’s Graduate Program C.E.E.B. code PVC-C4-74. Students wishing more information on the GMAT should visit the GMAT website at http://www.mba.com

All applications are initially screened by CSUN Admissions and Records. Once applicants have met the university graduate admissions requirements, application materials are forwarded to the COBAE Office of Graduate Programs and the Accounting and Information Systems Department Graduate Admissions Committee for evaluation. The MSA Graduate Admissions Committee meets regularly to review applications. Approved applicants are notified by the COBAE Graduate Office via email.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Part-time Faculty Positions for 2011-2012 Academic Year

MSA: CalCPA Announces Scholarship Program for Masters Students

On Tuesday, July 12, 2011, the California Society of CPAs (CalCPA) Accounting Education Committee (AEC) announced big changes to its state-level scholarship program. Previously graduate scholarships from the AEC were limited to PhD students. Starting this academic year, CalCPA will be offering awards of $2500 to $5000 to select outstanding students enrolled in either a Master of Accountancy or Master of Taxation. Students who have received undergraduate scholarships from a CalCPA local chapter before are even eligible. According to AEC Co-Chairs Charles T. Osaki and Chrislynn Freed, the reason for the changes is to “open up scholarship opportunities to a larger number of students and focus on those students pursuing graduate education.” This is good news for CSUN MS Accountancy and MS Taxation students looking for additional financial aid and for students still considering an MSA or MST.

Eligibility

Students applying for the CalCPA graduate scholarships should possess the qualities necessary for a successful career as an accounting professional. Applicants must be attending an accredited college or university in California and be enrolled in a graduate program in accounting or taxation in winter quarter or spring semester of 2012. Applicants are not eligible if they are already licensed as a CPA in any state OR have completed all the educational requirements for Pathway 2 licensure in California.

As part of the application process, candidates must provide evidence that they:

* Have been admitted to a Master’s program in tax or accounting, or admission to a blended program conferring a Master’s degree.

* Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher and a 3.3 or higher grade point average in upper division or graduate accounting courses.

* Have completed at least 6 semester units or 9 quarter units of upper division or graduate accounting.

* Are enrolled in at least 6 semester units or 9 quarter units for the 2012 winter quarter or spring semester.

The application must be postmarked no later than October 1, 2011. Scholarships will be awarded late fall.

CAL CPA Scholarship Application

MSA: Fee Waiver Opportunity

If you’re wondering how you might finance a Master’s in Accountancy, consider this: Teaching Associates can be awarded a State University Fee Waiver of up to $3,009 for the Fall 2011 Semester. That’s a little over 50% of the tuition and fees. The MSA may be just a little more affordable than you think. Here are the details:

MSA Seeks Two Graduate Teaching Associates

The Department of Accounting and Information Systems has received approval to hire two graduate teaching associates (TA) for the Fall 2011 Semester. In addition to an hourly wage (approximately $10 – $15 per hour), TAs receive a State University fee waiver. For students taking 6.1+ units or more, the waiver is equivalent to $3,009 for the semester; for students taking 0-6 units the waiver is $1,746.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Accountancy program. At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

TA Responsibilities

TAs typically work 20 hours per week. Teaching Associates have broad responsibilities that may include assisting with undergraduate course instruction, tutoring, faculty research, or administrative duties involving the MSA program. Under the direction of the Department Chair or his designee, TAs may be asked to

· Prepare course materials following guidelines provided by faculty

· Provide writing laboratory or computer laboratory instruction

· Administer undergraduate quizzes or examinations

· Assess undergraduate student performance on assignments and exams, keep accurate records, and determine final course grades

· Tutor undergraduate or graduate students during scheduled office hours

· Attend required meetings regarding course and curriculum preparation

· Assist faculty with research and grant writing

· Provide administrative assistance for the MS Accountancy program

· Work closely with the Department Chair, Associate Chair, and other Teaching Associates

TA Qualifications

· Possess a good understanding of undergraduate-level accounting, tax, information systems and/or business

· Possess excellent oral and written communication skills

· Have an ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and levels of academic preparation

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Information Systems, Economics, or business-related field preferred, but not required

· Teaching or tutoring experience preferred, but not required

Teaching Associate Application

To apply for a Fall 2011 Temporary Teaching Associate position in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, send an email or letter stating your interest to Dr. Christopher Jones along with a current resume or vitae. The review process will begin July 15, 2011. Positions are open until filled. Students selected for the teaching associate positions will be notified by the CSUN Office of Graduate Studies, Research and International Programs prior to the start of the semester.
